Mobile payments have become commonplace among CaixaBank customers. The bank reached a new milestone in June with a record volume of transactions made via smartphones and smartwatches. This data reflects a growing trend that now represents a significant portion of all card purchases.
According to data provided by the bank, users made 750,8 million mobile payments between January and June, 27,5% more than in the same period last year. June alone saw 139,7 million transactions, the highest monthly figure on record. These figures confirm that mobile payments have become a viable alternative to physical cards.
Record-breaking first half of the year
The growth of mobile payments has not slowed. In the first half of 2026, CaixaBank customers carried out more than 750 million mobile transactions , a 27,5% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. This growth is driven by the convenience of contactless payments and the broad compatibility of cards with various services.
June was a particularly strong month. With 139,7 million transactions , it surpassed all previous records. The bank describes this figure as a record and emphasizes that the upward trend will continue in the coming months.

Another relevant aspect is the growing importance of mobile payments in overall card purchases. According to data provided by CaixaBank, almost 44% of the bank's card transactions are now made via mobile devices or wearables . In other words, almost one out of every two purchases is paid for with a phone or watch.
More customers and linked cards
The number of users paying with their mobile phones continues to grow steadily. In the last twelve months, CaixaBank customers making purchases with their mobile phones increased by 18%, reaching 5,73 million . The number of cards linked to digital devices has also risen, increasing by 17,8% to 8,6 million.
These figures mean that a quarter of all cards issued by the bank are now linked to a payment device. CaixaBank has a portfolio of nearly 35 million cards in Spain, the largest in the country, and most of them can be used from a mobile phone or smartwatch.

The bank's commitment goes beyond the numbers. Customers can link their cards to leading mobile payment platforms such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Garmin Pay, Swatch Pay, and Fidesmo Pay . These solutions allow for contactless payments in stores, as well as on e-commerce apps and websites, all from their phones.
Security and user experience
The bank insists that mobile payments do not compromise security. Transactions are protected by three layers of security and authorized using biometric systems such as fingerprint or facial recognition. This contributes to a smoother, more secure, and personalized experience , as CaixaBank emphasizes.
Convenience is another factor that explains its success. Users can carry several cards integrated into the device and choose which one to use at any given time. Furthermore, smartwatches and other wearables allow for payments without needing to take out a wallet, while also offering various security features for mobile payments.

The impact on digital strategy
This progress is part of CaixaBank's 2025-2027 strategic plan, which focuses on digital transformation and the adoption of new technologies. The bank already has 13 million digital customers in Spain , having added more than 600.000 in the last year, placing it at the forefront of the financial sector.
Furthermore, through its subsidiary CaixaBank Payments & Consumer, the group leads the Iberian payments market. In total, they have more than 35 million cards in Spain and Portugal, over 19 million customers, and an outstanding loan portfolio exceeding €13.000 billion. Their market share of purchase transactions in Spain reaches 31%.

Looking ahead, the organization expects mobile payments to continue growing. According to its forecasts, the percentage of transactions made via mobile could increase significantly in the coming months, driven by the expansion of contactless technology and users' interest in futuristic and more agile payment technologies.

The data presented by CaixaBank reveals an unstoppable trend: mobile payments have become central to how Spaniards pay. With a record 139,7 million transactions per month and sustained growth of 27,5% in the first half of the year, the bank is consolidating its leadership in the digitalization of payments. The combination of convenience, security, and a variety of platforms suggests that this trend will continue to rise in the coming years.
